Welcome! I'm Honored You're Here
How mindfulness transformed my life. And how it can change yours, too.
Dad died when I was 34.
Short battle with cancer. Long battle with alcohol.
Sleeping on the couch next to his hospice bed, he’d groan in pain throughout the night. Other than my presence (and more meds), touch was the only comfort I could offer.
As his death drew closer, he’d get up in the darkness and cover me with a blanket. I’d pretend to be asleep, peeking at him through half-closed eyes.
In those moments, it was evident what was most important to him.
I wish I could thank him for his compassion. Embrace him. Feel his heartbeat against my chest again.
He helped me grasp the razor-sharp clarity that death provides. But also, that this clarity comes with the ultimate price.
After his passing, I set out on a 13-year journey. Toward healing. Light. Authenticity.
And a mindful life where I recognize everyday miracles as they occur—long before I’m covering my own children sleeping next to my deathbed.
Why “Mindfulness Changes Lives?”
Hi, I’m Derek. I’m honored you’re here.
Mindfulness didn’t just transform my life—it saved it.
In 2023, following years of deep depression, I had an intent, a plan, and the means to end my life. Letters to my loved ones were written. I just had one final session with my therapist.
In a hail-Mary effort, she recommended reaching out to a local group of physicians about exploring ketamine therapy.
Through their guidance, I’ve not only found relief from depression, but also remembered my inner light, reshaped my worldview, and—perhaps most importantly—learned mental tools that allow me to remain above the darkness when it inevitably creeps around the periphery of my psyche.
While ketamine was a catalyst, years of practicing mindful techniques allowed me to download, hone, and implement the emotional tools revealed by the molecule. Without the fertile soil of mindfulness already in place, I know I’d be in a much different place today.
Why You?
Now, that’s why I write: To help others mindfully realize the preciousness of their own everyday miracles and live from a place of authenticity, empathy, and compassion.
Not tomorrow. Now.
If you’re interested in maximizing your mental wellness, learning what your emotions can teach you, and living your best life—however you define it—I’d be honored to have you along for the journey, and to help you reach your goals.

Are you saying Ketamine therapy had such a big impact on you? It was the deciding factor for you not committing suicide?
That is very interesting. I haven't heard that before, that it holds that power.
Hi, I'm not 100% sure, but pretty sure, if you're Dave Lakin's son, that was in a band. Can't remember if you played guitar or drums, but you guys practiced at your house off Decker drive. I met you several times working there for your Dad. he actually gave me that beautiful hot tub! I worked with him on many many remodeling jobs, doing mostly electrical work. I last saw him when he was living off I-10 and Chimney Rock? area. I never knew he actually died. We were good friends! I did work for Maralyn too at the Tomball house. Anyway If this makes no sense LOL, forget it, sorry I have the wrong people, just memories
