Thank you, Derek, for sharing something so raw and incredibly human! That moment with your dad, when he quietly placed the blanket over you, says everything about the language of love and legacy.
Your openness about depression and healing is deeply inspiring. I explore similar themes through the lens of identity and how intentional shifts can open new paths forward.
Mindfulness, as you beautifully describe, creates the space where those shifts can finally take root.
Hi, I'm not 100% sure, but pretty sure, if you're Dave Lakin's son, that was in a band. Can't remember if you played guitar or drums, but you guys practiced at your house off Decker drive. I met you several times working there for your Dad. he actually gave me that beautiful hot tub! I worked with him on many many remodeling jobs, doing mostly electrical work. I last saw him when he was living off I-10 and Chimney Rock? area. I never knew he actually died. We were good friends! I did work for Maralyn too at the Tomball house. Anyway If this makes no sense LOL, forget it, sorry I have the wrong people, just memories
Hi, Greg, thanks so much for reaching out. Yes, that’s me! I’ve reconnected with several long-lost acquaintances here on Substack, and it’s a beautiful thing. How are you?
Holy Cow! Wow awesome. Yeah I have great long term memory, poor short term. I'm doing great! I worked with your dad on many projects, he liked me and treated me very good. I knew he was in bad health but he never discussed it. Still I have lots of fond memories working with him, and he is missed. Looks like you've done very well for yourself congrats. And hoping your mother is doing good, I always liked her. I think it was a Halloween night I last saw her in Tomball, fixing something! Take care Greg
This was so moving and thoughtfully written. Your journey through grief, healing, and mindfulness came through in every word. Thank you for sharing it with such honesty and depth.

Thank you again for this moving piece!

You belong here.
Thank you so much for taking the time to reach out, and for your kind words! May we all have the courage to remember ourselves. 🙏
Thank you very much for this vulnerable share Derek!
Are you saying Ketamine therapy had such a big impact on you? It was the deciding factor for you not committing suicide?
That is very interesting. I haven't heard that before, that it holds that power.
Thanks, Paul! Yes, ketamine and mindfulness were the keys that unlocked Derek 2.0.
